Communication is a game mechanic in Big Walk. Voice and text are both built into the session, and either one can carry the group through the full adventure.

Proximity voice chat

Voices fade as players move apart. They can echo down corridors, become muffled through walls, and crackle through walkie-talkies. Moving through the world therefore changes who can hear whom and how clearly.

Text chat without a microphone

Text chat follows the same intentional limits as voice chat. Messages are not readable when players are too far apart or separated by soundproof glass. Text also works with in-game items such as walkie-talkies.

This makes a microphone optional. A player can use text for the whole game without removing the communication rules that shape its challenges.

Why a separate call changes the game

Some situations restrict speech and ask the group to find another way to communicate. A separate voice app, or talking to friends in the same room, bypasses those situations. Big Walk does not stop or punish the group for doing it, but parts of the adventure will lose their intended logic and challenge.

Communication habits that fit the game

  • Test voice or text before leaving the starting group.
  • Use pointing, waving, and gestures when speech is unavailable.
  • Pass information while players are still within range.
  • Use walkie-talkies when the group discovers them.
  • Agree on a reunion point before splitting up.

The fun comes from working within the communication available at that moment, including the moments when it fails.
