Big Walk Multiplayer & Crossplay

Build a compatible Big Walk group before anyone launches the session.

Table of contents

Big Walk supports online crossplay for groups of 2 to 12 players. It is available on Windows and Mac through Steam, on Mac through the Mac App Store, and on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2.

Player-count rules

  • Two players is the minimum for meaningful progress.
  • Twelve players is the maximum.
  • The host selects a 2-player, 3-player, or 4+-player world when starting a session.
  • Fewer players creates a more focused cooperative session; a group closer to 12 is intentionally more chaotic.

The world selection does not set the maximum lobby size. Choose it around the minimum number of people likely to stay for the session.

Choose the world for the minimum dependable group

World choice Choose it when What it does not mean
2-player At least two people can stay for the puzzles you intend to attempt The lobby is capped at two
3-player At least three people can reliably remain involved A fourth or later friend cannot join
4+ player At least four people can stay; use this same setting for groups up to 12 Every puzzle requires all 12 people

Some parts of the world adapt to this choice. For example, a challenge that asks two players to hold simultaneous inputs in the 2-player world can ask for more simultaneous inputs in the 4+ world. That is a planning principle, not a universal solution: follow the visible targets in the current session instead of assuming every puzzle scales in exactly the same way.

If attendance is uncertain, choose the lower dependable number. Extra friends can still join the same lobby, while choosing a world that expects more people than will remain can leave too few hands for its adapted challenge state.

How crossplay groups connect

If the host appears on your current platform's friends list, the active game should appear in the friends-game menu. Otherwise, use the host's Join Code. The code is short, unique, and generated each time the host starts a session.

Join Codes are the straightforward option for friends on different systems. They are also required for Mac App Store players who cannot use a Game Center friends-game list.

For version compatibility, compare only the first two version-number segments. The official example format has three segments: 1.4.5 can connect to 1.4.7 because both begin with 1.4. Install available updates when those first two segments differ.

No public matchmaking

Big Walk does not place strangers into a random group. It is a long-form cooperative adventure intended for a group that can return over multiple sessions. Arrange the party before launching the game.

Playing from the same home

The communication design works best when players cannot hear each other outside the game. If friends are in the same home, use separate devices and separate rooms so proximity voice and communication barriers still work.

Crossplay session checklist

  1. Pick the returning host.
  2. Choose the world version for the minimum dependable group size.
  3. Share the Join Code outside the game before everyone joins.
  4. Test voice or text chat inside the session.
  5. Keep communication inside Big Walk once the group begins exploring.
