Big Walk Connection Errors — Join & Timeout Fixes
An official-first clean connection test with clearly separated launch-day observations and a support evidence checklist.
Table of contents
Big Walk supports crossplay, but a valid Join Code can still fail if the code is stale, the host has ended the session, versions differ, or either side is having a network or performance problem. Start with the visible symptom and change one variable at a time.
Match the symptom first
| What you see | Check first | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Friend's session is missing | Friend status, then current Join Code | That crossplay is disabled |
| “Session unavailable” | Host is still running and both versions match | That the password is the cause |
| Join attempt times out | Fresh code, fresh session, one retry after restart | That port forwarding is required |
| Host menu stays on “connecting” | Restart the game and platform network session | That a code exists but is hidden |
| Everyone jitters or voices drop | Host network and host frame rate | That only the joining player is at fault |
| Everyone disconnects together | Whether the host ended or lost the session | That the save was transferred |
Clean connection test
Use this order before changing routers or reinstalling anything:
- Choose the correct host. The host owns the save that the group intends to continue.
- Install available game updates on every system. Compare the visible game version where the platform exposes it.
- Fully restart Big Walk on host and joiner. Do not keep retrying from a
host menu stuck on
connecting. - Start a new host session. Every host start generates a new short Join Code, so discard any older code.
- Try platform friends first when both players use a supported friends list. If the room is absent, use the current code.
- Use a Join Code on the Mac App Store edition. It does not provide Game Center friend-session discovery.
- Enter the password exactly if the host set one. The host can inspect or change it from Session Details during play.
- Wait for one complete result. Cancelling and immediately starting several parallel attempts makes the error harder to isolate.
Never post an active code or password publicly when the intended session is private. The code changes with the next host session, but it grants access while the current one remains available.
Friend session does not appear
The official path is short:
- add the host as a friend on Steam, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch Online;
- confirm the host has already started their Big Walk session;
- reopen the active-friends list;
- if it is still absent, ask for the current Join Code;
- on Mac App Store, skip the friends-list step and use the code.
A missing friend listing and a failed Join Code are two different tests. If both fail, move to the version and timeout checks rather than repeatedly removing and re-adding the same friend.
“Session unavailable” or Join Code timeout
- Ask the host to open Session Details and read the current code again.
- Confirm the host has not returned to the title screen; ending the host session disconnects everyone and invalidates that session.
- Compare installed game versions, especially in a cross-platform group.
- Restart both games, create one fresh session, and try its new code once.
- If possible, test whether a same-platform friend can join the same host.
- As a diagnostic, reverse which platform hosts.
Release-day players reported timeouts and unavailable-session errors, particularly in some PS5/Switch 2 groups. Some succeeded after making the PS5 player host; others did not. Treat host reversal as a temporary test, not a guaranteed fix. A different host also owns a different save, so do not continue the main journey on the diagnostic world by accident.
Versions do not match
Crossplay support does not mean different builds can always share a session. If the platforms show different game versions:
- check each platform for an available update;
- fully close the game after updating;
- do not try to downgrade or alter local files;
- retry only after both sides show the current version offered to them;
- if the storefronts still offer different builds, record the versions and contact official support.
At launch, a community report observed PS5 and Switch 2 offering different version numbers. That is a time-stamped observation, not a permanent platform rule.
Everyone is jittering or voice keeps dropping
The official checks are:
- close network-heavy programs and pause large transfers on local devices;
- move closer to Wi-Fi or use Ethernet when possible;
- confirm the host has a stable frame rate;
- have the host lower Settings > Graphics > Quality and Render Scale if the whole group is affected;
- test a different host only after noting that progress will belong to that host's save.
Low host performance can look like a network fault. If only one player jitters, focus on that connection; if everyone jitters together, inspect the host first.
Rejoin after a disconnect
The original host keeps progress automatically. After an isolated disconnect:
- the host stays in the world;
- the disconnected player restarts only their game first;
- the host reads the active code from Session Details;
- the player rejoins with that code or the active-friends listing;
- the group meets at a named tower, station, Map Room, or tunnel entrance.
If the host disconnects or ends the session, everyone is removed. The same host must start again to continue that save; the new session will have a new code.
What to record for support
If the clean test still fails, send official support a reproducible report:
- every platform and store edition;
- game version on each system;
- which platform hosted;
- exact on-screen error text;
- local date, time, and timezone;
- whether the room appeared in the friends list;
- whether a fresh Join Code failed;
- whether same-platform joining worked;
- whether the fault affected one player or the whole group;
- whether the host had stable frame rate and wired or wireless networking.
Redact the active Join Code and password from public posts. Official Big Walk support is help@bigwalk.game. There is not enough verified evidence to recommend opening ports, disabling security, changing DNS, or editing game files for these launch symptoms.
