Big Walk Voice Chat Too Quiet — Microphone Fixes

A microphone activity test with official checks, PS5 Game Voice Chat steps, safe mix workarounds, and support evidence.

Big Walk intentionally changes voice with distance, walls, and in-game tools. That expected proximity effect is different from a microphone with no input or a voice that remains inaudible while two players stand face to face. Test at point-blank range first so you know which problem you are solving.

Thirty-second classification test

Put two players beside each other in a quiet open area. Do not use a walkie-talkie, radio, megaphone, wall, or closed room.

  1. Open Settings > Audio on the speaking player's game.
  2. Speak normally and watch Microphone Activity.
  3. Have the listening player confirm whether they hear nothing, a quiet clear voice, or a normal close voice.
  4. Walk apart slowly and note where the voice begins to fade.

No microphone activity

Follow the official checks in order:

  1. test the microphone in another application or system input test;
  2. fully insert its cable or wireless receiver;
  3. check the headset, controller, or microphone's physical mute control;
  4. lower a boom microphone into its speaking position;
  5. in Big Walk, inspect Settings > Audio > Mute Mode;
  6. if Mute Mode is Hold, keep the talk control held while speaking;
  7. confirm the correct input device is selected by the system and allowed to the game.

Do not raise every gain control at once. First make Microphone Activity respond reliably to normal speech, then ask another player to judge the level.

Microphone activity moves but nobody hears you

  1. Make sure the listener has not silenced you in Big Walk's moderation menu.
  2. Have both players leave any platform party or external voice channel and use the in-game game-chat session.
  3. Confirm the listener has normal game audio.
  4. Rejoin the same Big Walk host session and repeat the point-blank test.
  5. If several voices disappear or drop together, use the network checks rather than changing every microphone.

Text chat is a complete supported alternative and follows the same intentional distance, obstruction, and item rules. It is the correct fallback when a player cannot use voice, not an inferior emergency channel.

PS5 — check Game Voice Chat

PS5 can mute game chat independently of the microphone hardware.

  1. Press the PS button to open Control Center.
  2. Select Sound.
  3. If Mute Game Voice Chat is enabled, turn it off.
  4. Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone.
  5. Confirm the intended Input Device and use Adjust Microphone Level.
  6. Return to Big Walk and confirm its Microphone Activity meter moves.

A release-day PS5 report with a working system microphone was resolved by the Mute Game Voice Chat setting. That does not prove every PS5 voice failure has the same cause, so still run the in-game meter test.

Point-blank voice is too quiet

Release-day players on more than one platform reported voices that were quiet even face to face while footsteps, water, confetti, and other ambience remained loud. At launch, no verified separate in-game sliders for received voice and ambient effects were documented.

Use safe checks that preserve the intended in-game audio:

  • place the microphone or headset boom at its normal speaking distance;
  • increase the platform's microphone input level one small step, then retest;
  • use headphones so speaker sound does not mask voices or feed back into the microphone;
  • test with exactly two players before judging a crowded room;
  • ask whether every speaker is quiet or only one account;
  • avoid turning the whole output dangerously high just to hear speech.

Lowering Big Walk's single overall volume lowers both game sound and received voice, so it does not necessarily repair their balance. Do not install audio injectors or edit game files as a workaround.

If close-range voice stays much quieter than other applications, record the platform, headset, input level, Microphone Activity result, and a point-blank comparison for official support.

Distance, walls, and tools

When close voice is clear but distant voice fades, the system may be working as designed. Big Walk applies distance and obstruction to voice and text.

  • Move closer or restore line of travel for normal proximity chat.
  • Use walkie-talkies when the group deliberately separates.
  • Use a megaphone to project a voice across open distance.
  • Use fixed radio transmitters and receivers for island-wide landmark messages.
  • Use a whiteboard, signal light, gesture, or text when speech is constrained by a puzzle.

Do not test proximity audio through soundproof glass and then diagnose a broken microphone; the obstruction can be the puzzle.

Echo or doubled voices

Have players mute one at a time until the doubling stops. The identified player's microphone is probably picking up a speaker. They should use headphones or remain muted when not speaking. Raising microphone gain to solve quiet speech can worsen this feedback, so repeat the echo test after every gain change.

Voice drops while players jitter

This points to the same network or host-performance path as erratic movement:

  1. stop large local transfers and network-heavy applications;
  2. use Ethernet or move closer to Wi-Fi;
  3. check the host's frame rate;
  4. have the host lower Quality and Render Scale;
  5. reconnect to the same host and retest beside one another.

Report a reproducible audio problem

Send help@bigwalk.game:

  • platform and store edition;
  • game version;
  • microphone/headset and input device;
  • whether Microphone Activity moves;
  • whether the failure happens face to face;
  • whether text chat, walkie-talkies, or fixed radios behave differently;
  • whether all players or one player are affected;
  • whether movement also jitters;
  • the result of the PS5 Game Voice Chat check, when relevant.

Describe what you observed rather than declaring the audio system universally broken. That distinction helps support separate input, mix, proximity, and network faults.
